Jean-Philippe Mateta’s Crystal Palace deal is set to run until the summer of 2027, but the French forward is currently disputing the validity of the remaining portion of his agreement.
According to information from multiple sources speaking to BBC Sport, the 29-year-old has initiated formal proceedings challenging the legitimacy of the final ten months of his Selhurst Park arrangement, which concludes in June 2027.
Mateta featured in Palace’s Premier League season opener at Goodison Park on Saturday. He arrived at the club in 2021, originally joining on an eighteen-month loan from Mainz 05.
When he completed a permanent transfer in January 2022, he signed a four-and-a-half-year contract that contained a provision for a twelve-month extension option.
The south London outfit triggered that extension clause in 2024, which means Mateta’s current terms are scheduled to end at the conclusion of this campaign.
However, the player is contending that the optional twelfth month should be considered void. An independent tribunal operating under Premier League regulations heard Mateta’s submissions.
While there has been no formal announcement regarding the ruling, sources indicate the contract remains in force.
The matter has subsequently been escalated to football’s global governing body, which determined this week that adjudicating on contract validity falls outside its authority.
BBC Sport contacted Mateta’s representatives and FIFA for statements.
Had Mateta’s argument succeeded, it could have potentially paved the way for him to depart as a free agent before his Palace terms were due to expire the following year.
The forward has established himself as a crucial component of the Eagles’ attack since arriving at Selhurst Park, finding the net sixty-seven times for the club.

Ismaila Sarr was absent from Palace’s matchday roster for the opening fixture, with incoming head coach Pierre Sage explaining that the player had been dealing with a physical issue.
Sources have indicated to BBC Sport that Sarr has not participated in training for the past two days, reporting discomfort in his groin area, with reported interest from Galatasaray in Turkey.
The Eagles are reluctant to part with their prolific forward, who contributed twenty-one goals across all competitions last season as the club secured the Community Shield and Conference League trophies.
One insider described Galatasaray’s interest as genuine but stressed that only an exceptionally generous offer would prompt consideration of a sale.
Defender Chadi Riad required stretcher assistance after sustaining a serious knee injury during the two-nil loss at Goodison Park.
