Chelsea sign 18-year-old Honest Ahanor for £40m, loan to Palace first

Crystal Palace have secured the temporary signing of Honest Ahanor from Atalanta, with the teenage Italian defender set to complete a permanent move to Chelsea in 2027.

The 18-year-old left-back will spend the remainder of the current campaign with the Eagles before officially becoming a Chelsea player next summer.

The transfer structure represents a strategic solution designed to circumvent existing Premier League regulations governing player loans between clubs in the same division.

Under the agreement, Atalanta will loan Ahanor to Palace for the 2026-27 season before completing the sale to Chelsea for a package worth up to £40m.

Chelsea confirmed the arrangement following their acquisition of centre-back Maxence Lacroix from a London rival for £52m last month and the subsequent loan of Axel Disasi to Palace for £3m.

The Stamford Bridge club previously faced scrutiny regarding their approach to financial and regulatory frameworks.

Concerns were raised after the club sold property assets including accommodation near their stadium and their women’s football operation to entities within their ownership group, a strategy employed to satisfy financial fair play requirements.

Extended contract durations offered to players following the 2022 American takeover enabled transfer expenditure to be amortised across longer periods.

In each instance, governing bodies subsequently introduced regulatory amendments in response.

Chelsea’s interest in Ahanor originated during negotiations for right-back Marco Palestra, whom the west London club signed from the Serie A outfit in July.

Atalanta had previously rebuffed a substantial offer from Brighton amounting to £29m, equivalent to 34m euros, earlier in the current transfer window.

Ahanor progressed through the youth ranks at Genoa before moving to Atalanta last summer in a deal reported to cost 16m euros plus an additional 4m euros in performance-related clauses.

The defender featured prominently for his previous club, making 28 Serie A appearances during the 2025-26 season and establishing himself as a consistent starter in Bergamo.

His solitary senior goal came in the Coppa Italia fourth round as Atalanta defeated Genoa 4-0 in December 2025.

The young defender made his continental debut in a 2-1 Champions League victory against Club Brugge in September.

Italy national team selectors recognised his development by summoning him for international duty in May, selecting him for friendly fixtures against Luxembourg and Greece.

Ahanor expressed his enthusiasm upon joining Palace, describing his excitement at joining an institution recognised for nurturing young talent within the top flight.

Separately, Marc Guiu departed Stamford Bridge to join German side RB Leipzig.

The 20-year-old forward, who arrived from boyhood club Barcelona in July 2024, completed 29 first-team appearances for Chelsea, finding the net eight times.

The transfer fee agreed with the Bundesliga club reached £14.6m when add-ons were included.
