France World Cup centre-back Maxence Lacroix has completed a move to Chelsea from Crystal Palace in a deal worth £52m.
The 26-year-old, who has earned seven caps for his country, has committed his future to Stamford Bridge until 2032.
The French defender arrived at Selhurst Park from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg two years ago in an initial £15.5m switch and established himself as a key figure under Oliver Glasner during the most recent campaign.
Lacroix featured 55 times across all competitions as Palace claimed their maiden major European honour by winning the Uefa Conference League.
The centre-half represented Les Bleus on three occasions during the 2026 World Cup, which included an appearance against England in the bronze-medal match as France ended the tournament in fourth spot.
When asked about joining Chelsea, Lacroix expressed his delight at the prospect of writing a new chapter alongside players such as Reece James and Morgan Rogers. He stated he felt proud and fortunate to be involved in what he described as an exciting project, adding that he was eager to meet his new team-mates and begin the upcoming season, believing there was a compelling story to build together at the club.
Lacroix becomes Chelsea’s third summer acquisition, following the arrivals of Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra at the west London club as they gear up for Xabi Alonso’s first season at the helm.
Winger Geovany Quenda and striker Emmanuel Emegha had their transfers agreed last year, with both set to officially join this month.
The Blues are also in discussions regarding potential moves for Brighton’s Danny Welbeck and Brentford’s Jordan Henderson.
Analysis suggests Lacroix had featured on Chelsea’s list of centre-back targets since concerns emerged about their defensive performances and the need for greater physical presence and leadership at the back. While former Manchester City defender John Stones and Como’s Jacobo Ramon were known to have been assessed, the 6ft 4in Palace man appeared to be Chelsea’s favoured option throughout. Extended talks over personal terms and the transfer fee created uncertainty, though Lacroix approved the switch last week after France’s World Cup campaign concluded with a fourth-place finish following defeat by England in the third-place encounter.
The signing provides insight into Chelsea’s strategic direction after a season that saw them finish mid-table in the Premier League and end the campaign without silverware, disappointing supporters.
Co-owner Behdad Eghbali indicated the club would refine their approach and introduce more experience to complement what he views as a promising core of youthful talent, naming Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill among those players.
Lacroix represents the oldest addition during Eghbali’s ownership tenure, with Chelsea having also pursued 34-year-old Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka in a move that would have marked a departure from their usual recruitment model. Although unable to reunite the Switzerland international with his former Bayer Leverkusen manager Alonso, the pursuit signalled an apparent shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy.
Alongside Rogers, whose £117m arrival came as he celebrated his 24th birthday at the weekend, Lacroix’s signing fulfills Chelsea’s commitment to securing at least two established players capable of making an immediate impact.
