Vitor Matos has announced that Joel Ward’s stint at Swansea City has come to an end following the conclusion of his brief contract with the Welsh club.

The flexible defender arrived at the Swans in January to see out the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

He made 16 appearances in all competitions for the Championship outfit during the latter half of the previous campaign, though only three of those came as starts.

Matos stated that Ward’s presence proved valuable to the squad in terms of character throughout last season.

He arrived at a point in the campaign when the team required someone with his know-how and ability to lead. He was also capable of filling in across several positions.

This term, the club has opted to pursue alternative paths.

Following the end of the 2025-26 season, Swansea held discussions with Ward about the prospect of prolonging his spell at the club.

Nevertheless, Matos was keen to offer best wishes to the right-back – who is also comfortable operating at centre-back – for whatever comes next after his departure was confirmed.

Matos further noted that whatever path Ward chooses moving forward, be it management, another football position, or work outside the sport entirely, he will thrive because he possesses excellent qualities and strong principles.

Right-back Josh Key currently finds himself in the concluding year of his Swansea contract, while Sam Parker has departed for Wycombe Wanderers on a temporary basis.

The club has reintegrated academy graduate Filip Lissah into their ranks this summer after his productive season-long loan spell with Scottish club Falkirk last year.
